Recycle Trailer on Square
The Shelby Beautiful Clean Recycle Trailer is available to county residents daily on the square in Center.
Acceptable items include: Aluminum Cans, Newspapers, Magazines, Office Paper, Plastic #1 & #2, Flattened Cardboard, Steel Cans (food and beverage containers only)
Recycle Trailer Note: Please do not bring your recyclables and dump them off when the trailer is not on location. It is being emptied at that time. Anyone seen by law enforcement authorities leaving garbage/trash when the trailer is not on location, will be subject to fines for littering.

SHELBY SPRING CLEAN 2010 SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 10
Shelby Beautiful Clean Committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup and the Don’t Mess with Texas Trash Off announces the 2010 Shelby Spring Clean will be held Saturday, April 10 throughout Shelby County. Disposal sites will be located in Center from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Joaquin from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Shelbyville from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Tenaha from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Timpson from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
All of Shelby County is encouraged to clean up the downtown areas, neighborhoods, highways and individual properties.
Help is needed ahead of time by gathering items to dispose of and by planning to spruce up area properties on Spring Clean day or during the prior week. Residents will have the opportunity to use disposal sites located throughout the county on April 10. This is a great opportunity to get together with friends, neighbors, church members, co-workers, family members, school classmates or civic organizations and join the effort to make Shelby County more beautiful.
Wal-Mart Supercenter will accept oil and oil filters at no charge, and tires for a nominal fee from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on April 10. The Center City Annex on Riggs Street will accept lead acid batteries between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Republic of Texas Celebration
The Republic of Texas Celebration will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to celebrate Texas Independence Day and the birthday of Sam Houston.
The one-day celebration led by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, William Carroll Crawford Chapter will include live pioneer way of life demonstrations, period dress, reenactments, fire starting, muzzle loaders, blacksmithing, cooking, finger & inkle loom weaving, gun making, Indian leather goods, primitive knitting, live entertainment, and food and refreshments.
Belvin’s Rangers will be making camp on the downtown square joining them will be the Attoyac Valley String Ensemble. Dr. Obadiah Bluefield’s Magical Elixir Show and Sonny Carlin and his exotic birds will also be in attendance. There will be stagecoach ride and surrey rides around the historic square.
The Children's Interactive Center will have areas where children can participate or watch pioneer type activities. They can make a clay pinch pot, cross stitch a design on gingham, dye a cloth square in natural dyes, color pictures of Texas facts or pioneer days, and make an edible graham cracker Texas flag. The children will also see kitchen and laundry display areas, observe soap making (by microwave), and after trying on pioneer clothes have their picture made with the Alamo.
There will be a flag retirement ceremony held on the courthouse grounds in the evening with Honor Guard / Boy Scouts & Black Powder Brigade, and the Daughters and Sons and Children of the Republic of Texas in attendance. The Center High School band will perform Texas Our Texas. Admission is free.
